Evol, and a new film ‘TakeOff’

It’s been a mad month of finishing work off… production for ‘Evol‘ by Callum Welsh is coming to an end. I went down south to watch it on the big screen earlier this month which was satisfying after the amount of work put into it. Changes to the music and sound design are still needed, visuals were still being tweaked right up until just a few hours before the cinema screening which left both myself and Joshua Green (who did the sound design) very little time to complete the sound and do a proper mix, not to mention record real instruments which we will be doing over the course of the summer. Anyhow, despite time constraints for both the audio and visual side of production, the film seams to have caught the eye of a fair few people over the internet, appearing on many blogs around the world and gaining a colossal 24,000 views in just three days on Vimeo!

Anyway, here is the film as it currently stands, the next version i post should be the finished version with completed visuals and sound, including real instruments!

In other news both myself and Joshua Green have been commissioned to work on the soundtrack for a new children’s animated cartoon short ‘TakeOff’ which is a pretty exciting project. As for ‘Evol‘ I will be writing and producing the Music and Joshua will be taking care of the foley and sound design. This will be the second film we have worked on together and i’m very pleased with how the whole project is going.

Four Films, Production – coming to an End.

It’s been a mad few weeks of last minute sound design and surround sound mixing for my latest film work. In fact just today i have been waving around bedsheets helping to re-create the sound of ship sails, and discussing how to extract boat-creaking sounds from a cabbage! But as well as being incredibly stressful, the past and coming few weeks of stress will soon be fully justified to the sound of four brand spanking new films to my name.

Just a quick one with a couple of projects i’m working on.

First of all, since my last post i’ve been commissioned to score and foley for a computer game trailer (War-Dogs). I can’t yet show you the trailer, however I thought i’d post a couple of stills and the first draft bid of the music (as i realise i haven’t yet posted any music to this blog).

Another Month, Another Post

So as i pressed the ‘publish’ button on my last post I was incredibly skeptical over the whole idea of blogging, however my skepticism has since been shunned as it would appear from all these fancy stats that a lot more of you are interested in what I have to say than I thought. So, here comes ‘Hello World II’ I hope for those of you that read on that it all makes sense as I am currently drinking my fourth cup of coffee of the day and am feeling pretty wired…

So how’s it all going? I hear you ask… Very well thank you, the previous months films have been progressing smoothly and i’m very pleased with the music and the projects as a whole. The directors i’m currently working with have a lot of really good ideas on the go… it’s interesting to see how the films are developing and becoming ever more visually rich as my mind boggles to comprehend CGI creation.

So what’s happened in you’re musical life since the last post? Well, I’ve been pounced on by another film crew, so yet more independent film short work. This is anything far from a complaint, independent film is possibly the best thing in my opinion to score, it’s great to be able to work alongside other film enthusiasts and create something really special between you, and it’s great to already be working on my third film this year! It’s also nice to have the luxury of having someone to bounce ideas off and gain inspiration from that knows the project inside out, something that is often only desired in this line of work when stuck in writing production music on your own (short of bugging everyone around me to listen to what i’m currently writing). Anyway, this project has only just started, and with less than a minute of not even semi-complete music finished it should be complete in a couple of months time for a grand unveiling so i shan’t ramble on about it any longer. Other musical endeavors also include a three part traditional hungarian piece for solo violin with orchestral accompaniment, this i’m sure will end up in the ‘audio‘ section of my website in the next couple of weeks.

Other than my writing, I am also in the process of applying for a traineeship as a producer with the BBC, which is an opportunity that i just couldn’t turn down. I’m off to BBC Manchester next week for a networking session with the people organising the 18 month endeavor. Although very competitive i’m going to give it my all and hopefully, just hopefully it could turn out to be something really amazing.

I’ll have to leave this post here and get back to you all later in the month on film progress (which will be slightly more interesting than todays as i shall unveil some audio clips of current work).

Hello! how are you? Welcome to my blog.

So I’ve decided to set up this blog for anyone interested in what i’m up to creatively at the moment (i.e music/film/TV/sound design and such).

2010 has gotten off to a good start already, in January I was commissioned for a multi-national televised commercial for Burrda sports clothing, as well as being asked to score for two independent films. It’s always nice to get the opportunity to work with enthusiastic directors, it makes a nice break from writing production music.

This commercial incorporates an orchestral cinematic sound delivering a build in tension and climatic ending. Examples of this work will be available on my website after it has been aired.

Evol

Evol Film

Evol is a film by Callum Welsh, The synopsis is of a man hunting a phoenix but after his life is left in peril, the phoenix embodies him and a new phoenix arises from his soul. The music has an oriental feel but still has strong western influence in terms of orchestration and structure. This project is still very much in production and incorporates some fantastic visual work, after the scoring and orchestration work is completed and sound design added by Josh Green this film should be a very impressive spectacle.

Yumbrella

A film by Sarah Parnell, Yumbrella has a charmingly innocent feel to it. More information on this film is to follow as scoring and production gets underway.

So while i’m going to be spending the majority of February and March working on these films along with updating my production music and demo content libraries, I am also planning on updating my studio throughout the latter half of March after the release of the new Mac Pro… It’ll be nice to finally have a refresh after suffering the mac users arch enemy ‘the beach ball of doom’ appearing far too often over my logic windows for the past three months due to the recent developments (and memory munching) VI instruments appearing on the market lately… talking of which, if you’re at all involved with classical scoring and orchestrating check out LA Scoring Strings which I have to say are some of the most malleable and realistic sounding string VI’s I have come across.

Anyway, I shall keep this first post short, I shall make another post after more progress has been made on my current projects…
